About this role

We do Consulting Differently

This role could be remote (from Argentina or the UK) or hybrid

The BRG AI Lab is building a production graph reasoning platform that ingests hundreds of thousands of documents per matter and supports defensible, courtroom-grade analysis for consulting engagements. The Knowledge Systems / Graph Engineer owns the graph layer end-to-end — how evidence becomes entities and relationships, how those structures are isolated per matter, and how LLM agents traverse them to answer questions spanning 5–15 reasoning hops.

Two peer-level positions are open. Both engineers share ownership of the graph layer and the Matter Isolation Model, with day-to-day focus split by workstream or practice domain. Most of what is described below does not yet exist — this is a design and build role.

Key Responsibilities

• Matter Isolation Model (greenfield design). Design the isolation architecture from scratch: per-matter partitioning, access boundaries, audit trails, and the patterns that keep one client’s entities, relationships, and embeddings separate from another’s across the data stack.

• Graph Ingestion Strategy. Define how unstructured evidence becomes a typed, provenance-tracked graph: extraction, schema evolution, cross-document entity resolution, confidence scoring, human-in-the-loop review, and incremental re-ingestion mid-matter.

• Multi-Hop Query Patterns by Practice Area. Build a library of parameterised query patterns tuned to each practice group’s reasoning shapes — causation chains, ownership structures, temporal sequences. Benchmark and tune for 5–15 hop depth without performance or accuracy collapse.

• Agent-Driven Graph Reasoning. Design the graph-side tool surface that LLM agents call: typed query tools, traversal primitives, result shaping for LLM consumption, and cost / latency guardrails. Agent orchestration itself sits with the application engineering team.

• Cross-layer consistency. Keep the graph, vector embeddings, and search indexes semantically aligned so answers from different layers reconcile rather than contradict.

Qualifications — Required

• 5+ years of data or backend engineering experience, including 2+ years on production knowledge graphs or entity resolution systems.

• Strong graph database and Cypher experience. Comfortable with query planning, index selection, and the performance characteristics of deep traversals (5–15 hops).

• Strong Python for production data engineering — ETL, schema evolution, data quality, testing.

• Practical entity resolution at scale: blocking, similarity scoring, machine-learned matchers, provenance and confidence tracking, human-in-the-loop review.

• Working familiarity with vector retrieval and how it complements graph reasoning in RAG-style systems.

• Strong written and verbal English; able to translate consulting domain language into graph schema and collaborate with distributed teammates.

Qualifications — Preferred

• Neo4j experience. Production experience with Neo4j specifically — operational patterns, Cypher performance tuning, and schema migration at scale.

• Azure cloud experience. Our platform runs on Azure; fluency on AWS or GCP is also fine.

• Designing multi-tenant or matter-scoped isolation patterns in regulated industries (legal, financial services, healthcare).

• Designing tool contracts or APIs that LLM agents consume — good judgement on tool granularity, result shaping, and failure modes.
