Computational Genomics Senior Research Scientist
About this role
Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist in Computational Genomics to join Vertex’s global Data and Computational Sciences organization. This role is embedded within the Computational Genomics team and partners closely with Boston‑based research groups to design, analyze, and interpret human genetics, genomics, and sequencing‑based studies that advance drug discovery and development programs across multiple therapeutic areas. The successful candidate will provide scientific leadership in the application of human genetic analyses, genomics, and computational biology to biological discovery, target validation, and mechanistic understanding. This role requires strong technical depth, independent scientific judgment, and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights for cross‑functional project teams. This position is based in Boston, MA and is eligible for on‑site or hybrid work, with an expectation of at least three days per week on‑site.
Key responsibilities:
• Serve as a senior computational genomics partner to discovery and project teams, acting as the primary bioinformatics and genomics subject‑matter expert for assigned programs
• Lead the design, analysis, and interpretation of human genetics, genomics, and sequencing‑based studies to address key biological and translational questions
• Apply sophisticated computational and statistical approaches to analyze large‑scale human genetic, genomic, and functional genomics datasets, integrating best practices and emerging methods from the field
• Distill complex analyses into clear conclusions, recommendations, and next steps for diverse scientific audiences, including non‑computational stakeholders
• Provide scientific ownership and accountability for human genetics and genomics deliverables, ensuring high‑quality, timely outputs that support project decision‑making
• Partner with computational and genomics method development teams to identify opportunities to improve robustness, scalability, and usability of internal analysis approaches
• Stay current with advances in human genetics, genomics technologies, and computational biology, and proactively advocate for approaches that could accelerate Vertex’s research programs
Knowledge and Skills:
• Experience applying computational methods and bioinformatics tools to large‑scale biological datasets; proficiency in R or Python, Unix/Linux environments, and high‑performance computing systems.
• Solid grounding in statistics and genetics, including the role of human genetic variation in disease biology.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively across cross‑functional teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced research environment.
• A collaborative, growth‑oriented mindset, with a commitment to scientific rigor, continuous learning, and supporting team success.
Minimum Qualifications:
• PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, human genetics, systems biology, bioengineering, or a related field, with 3+ years of relevant post‑doctoral or industry experience; or Master’s degree in a related field with 8+ years of relevant industry experience.
• Demonstrated excellence in the analysis, visualization, and interpretation of human genetics, genomic, and next‑generation sequencing (NGS) data.
