The Data Engineering Lead is responsible for leading the design, development, and operation of scalable, reliable, and secure data platforms and pipelines for Toll, primarily within Global Logistics & Global Forwarding. The role provides technical leadership to a team of data engineers and partners with stakeholders across IT and the business to deliver trusted, governed data products that enable analytics, reporting, and data-driven decision-making. It emphasises modern engineering practices (automation, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code), robust data quality and governance, and continuous optimisation of performance and cost.
Leadership & Delivery
• Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of data engineers across multiple initiatives, providing technical direction and coaching.
• Define and maintain data engineering standards and ways of working (coding standards, documentation, testing, operational readiness
• Work closely with business analysts, project managers, and developers to deliver initiatives on time and within scope; provide estimates and support planning
Data Engineering & Platform Execution
• Oversee the design and implementation of Global Logistics & Global Forwarding data ingestion, transformation, and orchestration pipelines for batch (and where required, near real-time) use cases.
• Oversee development using modern frameworks/tools (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Synapse) or equivalent.
• Continuously optimise performance of data systems (query performance, latency reduction, efficiency improvements).
Data Quality, Governance & Observability
• Implement data quality checks and monitoring to ensure integrity, consistency, and accuracy of data being processed.
• Incorporate validation logic, reconciliation processes, and exception handling into development practices.
• Drive adoption of metadata management and governed data access practices (e.g., cataloging/lineage/access controls as applicable).
Stakeholder Engagement
• Engage with business units, product owners, and domain leads to understand pain points and co-design data-driven solutions.
• Communicate technical solutions clearly and confidently to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Partner with IT security, infrastructure, and DevOps teams to ensure resilience, performance, and compliance.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
• Evaluate emerging tools and platforms, recommending opportunities for optimisation and innovation.
• Stay ahead of data trends in logistics, supply chain, and transportation to drive continuous improvement.
Project Collaboration
• Work closely with business analysts, project managers, and other developers to deliver projects on time and within scope.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.
• Provide accurate estimates for development tasks and contribute to project planning.
Security & Compliance
• Implement security best practices in design and development.
• Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and internal IT policies
Requirements
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
• 7–10+ years of data engineering experience, with 2–3 years in a leadership role
• Proven track record delivering large-scale data solutions (logistics/supply chain experience preferred)
• Strong expertise in Azure data tools (e.g., Data Factory, Databricks, Synapse) or equivalent
• Proficiency in Python and SQL; solid understanding of ETL/ELT, data modeling, and pipeline design (batch & near real-time)
• Experience with performance optimisation, CI/CD, and DevOps practices
• Hands-on experience with data quality frameworks, governance, monitoring, and metadata management
• Strong understanding of data security, compliance, and secure pipeline design
• Demonstrated leadership in mentoring teams and managing cross-functional stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills, able to translate technical concepts for business audiences
• Experience working in Agile environments, with strong planning and estimation skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver within timelines
• Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure preferred), data observability tools, and certifications (e.g., DP-203) is an advantage
