The Opportunity
The Director, Business Data Strategy will lead the development and execution of a comprehensive data strategy roadmap within Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC), focused on responsibly operationalizing connected medical device, digital, cloud data and commercial systems to improve product quality, customer experience, and commercial engagement. The role owns what business value the data product must deliver, ensures fitness for business use, and acts as the business authority for data quality, definitions, and governance. This role is accountable for end‑to‑end data product outcomes from vision and prioritization through release, adoption, and measurable business value realization and is accountable for what value is delivered, not how solutions are technically built
What You'll Work On
This role will report to the DVP of Global Strategic Marketing and lead a team of data professionals to solve strategic questions that guide the development of innovative data solutions and measure their success in driving intended business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
• Accountable for maximizing business value from data products by setting strategic direction, defining success measures, prioritizing the business backlog, and approving readiness for release. Serves as final business authority on whether a data product is fit for business use
• Serves as business owner of domain data, ensuring it is accurate, well-defined, trusted, and used appropriately by setting clear definitions and KPIs, managing privacy and access expectations, approving data for business use, and addressing data quality or usability issues when they arise. Owns metrics, definitions, hierarchies, and calculation logic, to ensure a single version of truth across ADC
• Serves as the business voice in data governance and ethics decisions, ensures standards are applied in everyday practice, leads and empowers Data Stewards to deliver measurable business value, and drives adoption of governance as a core business discipline. Directly accountable for stewardship effectiveness and outcomes, tying governance activities to business impact
• Provides feedback as a strategic partner to medical product and business enablement teams by applying a deep understanding of device development lifecycles and post-market surveillance to enable appropriate, high-value use of connected system data. Acts as the business escalation point for data integrity, or misuse issues affecting regulated products or customer experience
• Drives adoption and measurable business value from data products after launching by focusing on real decisions and actions, tracking usage and outcomes, and building data literacy and confidence to support self-service and informed decision making. Accountable for defining and measuring adoption, usage, and value realization of metrics after deployment.
• Enables proactive identification of product and system quality issues through connected data insights, supporting effective customer communication, and improved troubleshooting efficiency.
• Partners with Commercial and Marketing teams translate system usage insights into responsible, patient-appropriate product education and engagement in compliance with medical device and promotional regulations.
• Evaluates and prioritizes AI and advanced analytics use cases through the lens of medical device risk management, regulatory impact, data integrity, and patient safety. Owns ongoing business accountability for responsible AI use, including human‑in‑the‑loop expectations, data fitness for AI, and authority to halt or redesign use cases where risk thresholds are not met. Maintains clear decision rights between business data ownership and IT/platform delivery teams, owning prioritization, value tradeoffs, and outcomes while partnering closely with technical delivery organizations.
Required Qualifications
• Degree in engineering, computer science, life sciences, or a related field; advanced degree preferred. Candidates should bring significant experience working within regulated medical devices or digital health environments.
• At least 10 – 15+ years of experience spanning medical device development, digital health systems, and data governance, with demonstrated leadership in cross-functional, matrixed organizations.
• Proven experience owning data or analytics products from concept through adoption and value realization in largescale, regulated environments.
• Working knowledge of analytics, data, and AI platforms sufficient to guide teams and make informed trade-offs, with primary emphasis on strategy, governance, and cross- functional leadership.
• Recognized as a trusted integrator and translator across technical, clinical, regulatory, and commercial stakeholders; able to align diverse perspectives around clear operating models and shared outcomes.
• Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to distill complex data findings into actionable recommendations.
• Excellent communication skills in English; proficiency in a second language preferred but not required.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with global stakeholders across multiple time zones.
• Proven people management skills with a passion for building high-performing teams in a matrix working environment and leading through influence where formal authority is shared across functions
