About this role

About the Role

The Incident Analysis & Learning Lead plays a critical role in making sense of complex operational events and ensuring the organization learns effectively from them. This role leads investigations into high-potential events, with ownership for understanding what happened, why it made sense at the time, and how the system influenced outcomes.

This position emphasizes strong causal reasoning, working closely with the people who do the work to help them develop clear, practical actions that address underlying drivers. A key part of the role is ensuring investigation insights are shared in ways that support learning at both the rig level and across the broader organization, so lessons from events are understood, usable, and applied beyond the immediate investigation.

As part of a global investigations team, this role partners with operations, engineering, and safety to drive consistent, system-focused investigations that are understandable and useful to both leaders & frontline teams.

This role is well suited for individuals from diverse technical, operational, and analytical backgrounds who are curious, detail oriented, and motivated to improve how work gets done, not just identify what went wrong.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and own investigations of high‑potential or significant incidents from initiation through close‑out, including investigation planning, data collection, analysis, documentation, and corrective action development.
• Support or participate in investigations across the fleet as part of the global investigations team, mobilizing as required.
• Work with cross‑functional stakeholders to ensure clear investigation scope, aligned expectations, and effective communication throughout the investigation lifecycle.
• Apply structured investigation methods to evaluate human, technical, organizational, and system‑level factors contributing to events, with an emphasis on sound causal reasoning.
• Partner with leaders and frontline teams to develop practical, effective actions that address underlying causes and meaningfully reduce the likelihood or consequence of recurrence.
• Perform quality control reviews of lower‑severity or frontline investigations (e.g., COMET‑Lite), providing feedback, coaching, and guidance to strengthen causal reasoning & investigation quality across the organization.
• Act as a coach and thought partner to leaders and teams, building investigation capability and system‑based learning mindset.

Required Experience & Capabilities

Backgrounds may include (but are not limited to): engineering, operations, safety, maintenance, reliability, quality, human performance, or other technical or investigative disciplines. Transferable skills and learning agility are highly valued.

• Strong ability to analyze operational incidents and identify underlying contributors beyond immediate or surface‑level issues.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and remain effective in time‑sensitive or evolving situations.
• A curious and analytical mindset, with willingness to challenge assumptions and dig beneath surface‑level causes.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with frontline personnel, technical experts, and senior leaders.
• Ability to collaborate across global teams, cultures, and time zones.
• Experience in high‑reliability industries such as offshore energy, maritime, aviation, manufacturing, or similar.

Preferred Experience

• Experience leading or supporting incident investigations in operational or industrial environments.
• Familiarity with investigation methodologies (e.g., TapRooT®, COMET, ICAM, Topset).
• Experience with human performance principles and performance‑influencing factors.
• Exposure to regulatory compliance and reporting in operational environments.

Working Conditions

• Hybrid role based in Houston, TX, with work performed across corporate offices and operational sites.
• Willingness to travel approximately 20%, including domestic, international, and offshore locations, sometimes on short notice.
• Ability to work in varied environments, including offshore and industrial settings.
• Valid passport required for international travel.
