Role Summary
Build and lead the software systems that keep athenahealth’s integration platform reliable, scalable, and ready for growth. Based in Boston, MA as a hybrid role, this position combines hands-on technical leadership with architecture, delivery, and team mentorship to support secure and efficient healthcare data exchange. The role partners across engineering, product, operations, and security to improve platform performance, developer productivity, and operational resilience. This position reports to the Senior Engineering Manager.
Team Summary
The Integration Platform team provides a secure, reliable, and developer-friendly foundation for real-time and batch data exchange across athenahealth systems, customers, and partners. The team helps accelerate partner onboarding, reduce operational overhead, and support data integrity through consistent integration patterns, reusable tooling, and well-monitored interfaces. As a central capability, the team focuses on improving interface stability and performance, supporting regulatory and compliance requirements, streamlining payer and partner connectivity, and strengthening observability and operational tooling. The team works closely with product, security, operations, and partner engineering to reduce manual effort, improve release confidence, and shorten time to value for customers.
In this role, the Lead Software Engineer will shape technical direction for integration services and related platform components while contributing directly to software design, implementation, and delivery. The role includes guiding engineers through design reviews, supporting code quality and maintainability, and helping ensure systems are built for reliability, performance, and long-term supportability. The individual in this role will collaborate across functions to solve complex problems, improve engineering workflows, and advance platform capabilities that support healthcare interoperability at scale.
Essential Job Responsibilities
• Lead the design, development, and delivery of software solutions that support integration platform capabilities and related healthcare workflows.
• Define system architecture and technical approaches for scalable, maintainable, and reliable services across distributed environments.
• Develop and review application code using Perl, Java, Spring Boot, JavaScript, and React across product and platform components.
• Collaborate with product, operations, security, and partner engineering teams to translate business needs into technical solutions.
• Mentor engineers through technical guidance, design reviews, code reviews, and ongoing support for skill development.
• Improve system reliability, performance, and observability through proactive engineering practices, monitoring, and problem resolution.
• Drive implementation of secure software patterns, automation, and infrastructure practices using AWS and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
• Support CI/CD pipeline design and optimization using tools such as Jenkins and Harness to improve delivery quality and release consistency.
• Apply data and integration standards, including relational database design and healthcare interoperability concepts such as HL7, where appropriate.
• Evaluate and incorporate AI-assisted development tools and workflows to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and problem-solving, while using sound judgment to validate outputs and share practical approaches with the team.
Additional Job Responsibilities
• Participate in roadmap planning and technical discovery for new integration and platform initiatives.
• Contribute to incident response, root cause analysis, and preventive action planning as needed.
• Assist in establishing engineering standards, reusable patterns, and documentation that support team consistency.
• Review operational metrics and service health trends to identify improvement opportunities.
• Support onboarding of new team members through knowledge sharing and technical walkthroughs.
• Coordinate with downstream and upstream teams to align dependencies and delivery timelines.
• Help assess vendor tools and platform capabilities that may improve delivery or operational efficiency.
• Represent the team in cross-functional discussions and planning sessions.
• Contribute to continuous improvement efforts for developer experience, test coverage, and release readiness.
Expected Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 6–8 years of software engineering experience in product development environments.
• Demonstrated experience leading technical work and mentoring engineers.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals with experience in system design and architecture.
• Proficiency in Perl, Java, and Spring Boot.
• Experience with JavaScript and React.
• Expertise in object-oriented programming and relational databases, including PostgreSQL and Oracle.
• Experience with version control systems, including Git and Perforce.
• Strong knowledge of AWS and Infrastructure as Code, including Terraform.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, including Jenkins and Harness.
• Preferred: Experience with healthcare integration standards such as HL7.
• Preferred: Familiarity with AI-assisted development practices and how to apply them responsibly in engineering workflows.
Expected Compensation
$143,000 - $243,000The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
