About this Role:
The Manager of Energy Systems and Optimization is responsible for overseeing the operational performance of building energy systems across the district’s facility portfolio. The district maintains more than 350 facilities, many of which operate with aging or inconsistent Energy Management Systems (EMS). As a result, a coordinated strategy is needed to evaluate current system conditions, establish standards, and develop a long-term roadmap for modernization.
This role will lead the assessment and optimization of existing EMS infrastructure while working closely with maintenance, capital construction, and the district’s energy management team to ensure consistent building operations across all campuses. By improving operational performance and identifying cost-saving opportunities through system optimization, the position will help generate savings that can be strategically reinvested into EMS upgrades. The long-term objective is to move toward a more integrated building automation environment where all facilities are connected, monitored, and controlled through a unified system, improving efficiency, reliability, and districtwide energy performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Energy Management Systems Governance
• Oversee districtwide Energy Management Systems (EMS) operations across school facilities.
• Manage EMS platforms operated by vendors including Trane, Delta Controls, and Johnson Controls
• Establish operational standards for HVAC scheduling, runtime management, and building system performance.
Building Performance Optimization
• Monitor building energy performance and identify opportunities for operational improvements.
• Implement demand management strategies to reduce peak load and optimize electrical consumption.
• Use advanced analytics platforms including AI to identify system faults and performance issues.
Operational Energy Management
• Coordinate with maintenance and facilities staff to resolve building system issues impacting energy use.
• Support ventilation and system integration for indoor air quality initiatives such as the BREATHE program.
• Monitor energy data through platforms such as EnergyCAP to track facility-level energy performance.
Vendor and System Oversight
• Manage EMS vendor relationships and service contracts.
• Coordinate software updates, system expansions, and building integration projects.
• Ensure building automation systems are functioning in alignment with district operational goals.
Energy Strategy Support
• Support district participation in initiatives such as the DOE Better Buildings Challenge.
• Assist in implementation of the internal Energy Wealth Plan through operational energy improvements.
• Collaborate with the Capital Project Managers to ensure newly installed equipment integrates effectively with EMS platforms.
• Assist in securing energy rebates from local utility.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, energy management, building systems, or related field.
• Experience with building automation systems and energy management systems in large facilities portfolios.
• Knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and building performance optimization.
• Experience working with building analytics platforms or energy monitoring tools.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to coordinate across facilities operations, contractors, and technical vendors.
• Preferred qualifications may include certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or related professional credentials.
What’s In It For You:
• Company-paid life and disability insurance
• Optional benefits like pet insurance, legal, and supplemental health plans
• 401(k) with day-one eligibility. You’ll get a 100% match on the first 3% of your eligible compensation and 50% match on contributions between 3% and 5% of your pay.
• Generous time off: 10 paid holidays and PTO starting at 15 days, growing up to 25
