Platform Engineer
The Platform Engineer performs operating-system and platform engineering across a diverse set of enterprise technologies. This includes system administration, automation, performance management, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and security risk reduction.
This team serves as a systems integration nexus—understanding how services operate across platforms and how they interconnect is a core responsibility. This role spans multiple environments including Linux, Windows, container platforms, virtualization, storage, and infrastructure systems. A strong emphasis is placed on improving security posture across all supported technologies.
What you will be doing in this position
As an engineer at this level, you will work both independently and collaboratively to design, implement, and maintain systems that support a wide variety of university needs. While much of the day-to-day work requires individual ownership and focus, success in this role depends on close collaboration with other engineers, project managers, security teams, and campus partners.
You will regularly participate in shared design discussions, contribute to team decisions, and help ensure solutions align with broader platform and security priorities.
You will also mentor student employees, helping them develop technical and professional skills as they gain real-world experience.
Details of Essential Functions
Production Support
• Provide Level 3 support for on-premises and cloud-hosted systems
• Maintain reliability, performance, and availability of platform services
• Integrate systems into monitoring, logging, and alerting frameworks
• Work with vendor support when needed
Business Partner
• Consult with campus departments on platform capabilities and best practices
• Help evaluate technologies and guide adoption decisions
• Translate technical concepts into practical solutions for diverse customers
Engineering
• Install, configure, patch, and upgrade systems across multiple platforms
• Automate system provisioning, configuration, and maintenance (e.g., Ansible/AWX)
• Troubleshoot complex system and integration issues
• Perform root cause analysis and implement long-term fixes
• Improve system integration across platforms and services
• Collaborate with team members and stakeholders on system design, architecture decisions, and implementation strategies
Security Focus
• Identify, prioritize, and remediate system vulnerabilities
• Reduce security risk through hardening, automation, and standardization
• Partner with security teams to implement controls and best practices
• Ensure systems meet institutional security requirements and compliance standards

Education and Experience

Different levels of pay are assigned by the hiring department depending on experience/education/skills and business needs.
• Level 53: Bachelor’s degree or four years of a combination of education and relevant experience. ($73,000-$95,000)
• Level 54T: Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience required. ($88,000-$114,000)
• Level 55T: Bachelor’s degree and five years of related experience, or master’s degree and 3 years, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience is required. Minimum of 2 years of technical supervision experience is preferred. ($102,000-$132,500)
Skills, abilities, or knowledge
You are not required to have experience in all areas listed below. What you don’t know we can teach you. We are seeking candidates with a broad platform mindset and a willingness to learn.
Required experience with:
• Systems administration in Linux and/or Windows environments
• Automation and scripting (e.g., Bash, PowerShell, Ansible)
• Troubleshooting complex system issues
Desired experience with:
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux
• Container and virtualization platforms (e.g., OpenShift)
• Configuration management and automation tools (Ansible/AWX)
• Reverse proxies and load balancers (e.g., HAProxy)
• Enterprise server and storage platforms (Dell, HP, Pure, etc.)
• Identity, authentication, and integration technologies (SSO, APIs, SCIM)
Familiarity with:
• Systems design, deployment, and performance optimization
• Networking concepts and system integration
• Monitoring and observability practices
• Security concepts, vulnerability management, and risk mitigation
• Cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments
Personal Skills
• Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively within a team environment
• Ability to balance independent work with shared ownership and collective decision-making
• Customer-focused mindset with the ability to engage a wide variety of stakeholders
