If you’re passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here!
The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at Carnegie Mellon University is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach to solving complex healthcare challenges. Located within CMU's College of Engineering, the department emphasizes the integration of engineering principles with biomedical sciences to address pressing medical and biological issues. The department is characterized by its focus on creating impactful technologies and therapies that improve patient care and advance biomedical innovation globally.
The Regenerative Biomaterials and Therapeutics Group (Principal Investigator: Adam Feinberg) in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support research focused on the development of bioengineered replacement corneal tissue.
This position is supported by an NIH R01 grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI). The Postdoctoral Research Associate will perform independent and/or directed research involving advanced biomaterials, cell engineering, and 3D bioprinting approaches for corneal repair and regeneration. The work will specifically focus on (i) shrink-wrapping and delivery of corneal endothelial cells using engineered extracellular matrix (ECM) protein scaffolds, and (ii) FRESH 3D bioprinting of collagen-based scaffolds for corneal stromal repair.
Core Responsibilities:
• Design, fabricate, and characterize ECM-based biomaterial scaffolds for corneal endothelial cell shrink-wrapping and transplantation
• Develop and optimize FRESH 3D bioprinting processes for collagen stromal scaffolds
• Organize, implement, and analyze data from experiments involving live human corneal cells, engineered tissues, explanted tissue, and in vivo animal models
• Contribute to development of experimental protocols, research methodologies, and animal study protocols
• Prepare written research summaries, NIH progress report materials, and manuscripts containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including engineers, biologists, and clinician-scientists
Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University.
