About the opportunity
Join the InsideOut Institute at the University of Sydney as a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Postdoctoral Research Fellow and contribute to the delivery, development and evaluation of innovative treatments for eating disorders. Working within a leading national centre for eating disorders research, you will contribute to a collaborative and purpose-driven research environment, supporting work that advances understanding and treatment of eating disorders.
In this role, you will deliver novel personalised treatments for eating disorders as part of a clinical trial team and hold a leading role in the development and testing of a new personalised measurement-based digital intervention for young people with emerging or full-syndrome eating disorders. Working under the guidance of senior academic staff, you will lead and support a range of research activities, including study coordination, data collection and analysis, stakeholder engagement, scholarly publications, and the translation of findings into practice. You will work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment.

Your Key Responsibilities as a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A):
• Deliver innovative treatments for eating disorders as part of a clinical trial team, including novel personalised psychotherapy packages for eating disorders, a new brain training and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) package and clinician guided digital therapies.
• Deliver high-quality psychological therapy to trial participants under trial conditions, according to protocol and therapy manual, ensuring adherence to ethical and clinical research standards while maintaining participant safety, engagement, and treatment integrity.Conduct high-quality research contributing to the co-design, development and testing of a new personalised measurement-based Single Session Intervention for young people with emerging or full-syndrome eating disorders.
• Analyse quantitative and qualitative data, prepare ethics and governance documentation, and contribute to publications, reports, conference presentations and other research outputs that advance discipline knowledge.
• Conduct research and scholarly activities, independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the advancement of knowledge within the discipline.
• Develop and refine research capabilities under the guidance of senior academic staff, progressively taking ownership of project milestones, timelines and research activities and building toward increasing independence.
• Support and mentor students and junior team members where appropriate, while fostering a collaborative, inclusive and respectful team culture aligned to the values of the InsideOut Institute and University of Sydney.
• Contribute to administrative activities, stakeholder engagement, faculty meetings and broader strategic initiatives that strengthen the impact and national profile of the InsideOut Institute.
In addition to the above, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level B):
• Lead the development of an independent research profile, with a strong track record of high-quality publications and scholarly outputs.
• Contribute to and support the preparation of competitive research grant applications and funding proposals.
• Develop and lead research collaborations, including translational research that drives impact across policy, practice, industry, or community settings.
• Provide mentoring to junior academics and supervise postgraduate research students or projects where appropriate.
• Contribute to the external visibility of the discipline through conference presentations, public engagement, and collaboration with industry and professional stakeholders.
About you as a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A):
• Completed PhD in Psychology, Public Health or a closely related discipline, with demonstrated understanding of eating disorders, mental health research or digital health interventions.
• Qualified clinical psychologist or psychologist (AHPRA-registered), preferably with experience in the treatment of eating disorders.
• Experience conducting original research and scholarly activity, including study design, ethics submissions, data collection, statistical analysis and preparation of publications or reports.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to deliver presentations, engage stakeholders and build productive relationships across academic, clinical and community settings.
• Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and coordinate multiple research activities simultaneously.
• A commitment to delivering high-quality stakeholder or customer-focused outcomes.
• Hold a consumer-focused, collaborative approach, with an emerging research profile and interest in contributing to innovative programs related to the field of eating disorders or mental health.
In addition to the above, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level B):
• Proven experience conducting original research and producing high-quality scholarly outputs.
• Demonstrated progression toward an established research profile within the discipline or area of expertise.
• Experience developing and maintaining research collaborations and partnerships across academic, industry, or professional settings.
• Proven ability to supervise and mentor students or junior researchers.
