Postdoctoral Research Fellow

About the opportunity

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will play a key role in leading and contributing to innovative clinical trials and translational research at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre. Working within a highly collaborative environment, you will help design, deliver, and translate research that improves patient outcomes and informs clinical practice.

A particular focus of this role includes contributing to major research programs in Type 2 diabetes, working within teams connected to internationally recognised work. This provides a unique opportunity to be involved in large-scale studies with global impact.

You will take ownership of research activities, from shaping research questions and developing protocols through to publication and dissemination. Alongside this, you will build strong collaborations across academic, clinical, and industry partners, supporting the translation of findings into policy and practice.

This role is well suited to a researcher looking to step into a more independent position, grow their track record, and contribute to high-impact research in a supportive and high-performing team environment.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• conduct high-quality original research independently and as part of a team within externally funded research projects led by Prof. Anthony Keech
• contribute to the design, conduct, analysis and delivery of research in areas including molecular biology, proteomics and biomarker-focused translational research
• take a leading role in the design, delivery, and reporting of translational research projects
• lead the preparation of high-quality manuscripts, conference presentations, and other research outputs
• contribute strategically to competitive grant applications and funding opportunities
• coordinate research activities across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring projects are delivered on time and to a high standard
• build and strengthen collaborations with internal and external partners, including clinicians, industry, and government stakeholders
• provide mentoring and day-to-day guidance to junior researchers and students
• contribute to the broader research, engagement, and strategic priorities of the Centre
• attend and contribute to relevant group, School and Faculty meetings and activities

About you

• a PhD in a relevant discipline
• familiarity with Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes (FIELD) clinical trial results
• a developing track record of impactful research, including peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
• laboratory skills in the areas of molecular biology, and cell biology
• demonstrated understanding of basic and advanced molecular biology methods
• demonstrated ability to utilise molecular biology techniques
• deep technical expertise and extensive experience in at least one of the following capabilities: proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics; including experience in operating and troubleshooting the corresponding instrumentation
• demonstrated experience contributing to or leading research projects, ideally in health research
• hands-on experience working in a laboratory research environment. Ability to coordinate and develop research projects, experimental design, prepare ethics submissions, advanced data analysis, and writing scientific reports/publications
• experience working in medical/clinical research, particularly in biobanking, genomics / molecular biology and/or large datasets and related analytics
• minimum 5 years supporting or performing LCMS research in at least one of the following: proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, single cell and spatial ‘omics
• ability to work both independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary environments
• strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working across academic, clinical, or industry settings
• demonstrated ability to mentor or supervise junior researchers or students
• excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
