Research Technologist I - Pediatrics Pathology

Summary
Under general supervision, the Research Technologist I supports the daily operations of institutional core services, with a focus on the Flow Cytometry Core and Pediatric Pathology. Core duties include maintaining sterile lab environments and equipment, preparing critical reagents and buffers, assisting with light experimental procedures as needed, and ensuring safe practices. Under general supervision provide support for department research through projects, maintenance, and communication of data. This position will be split between MFRC 5 and Pediatric Pathology on a day-to-day basis.
Primary Responsibilities for Flow Core/MFRC 5 work:
• Operate specialized sterilization equipment to ensure consistent, safe, and efficient functionality
• Support multiple labs by sterilizing lab glassware, plasticware and instruments using institutional equipment
• Handle and dispose of hazardous waste in accordance with safety protocols and maintain accurate records of disposal
• Support daily operations of the Flow Cytometry Core to ensure uninterrupted service by preparing buffer solutions, media, and sheath fluids.
• Assist in any health or safety emergencies
• Read, understand, and implement various safety protocols to ensure safe operations throughout the floor
• Monitor inventory and carry out assigned duties for ordering and maintaining supply of inventories.
• Other duties as assigned to support research program needs.

Primary Responsibilities for Pediatric Pathology work:
• Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research.
• Responsible for assisting faculty and lab staff with day-to-day operations in the Pediatric Pathology labs
• Pick up mail from mailroom
• Coordinate getting broken shared equipment serviced and help investigate and order new pieces of shared equipment
• Manage and monitor the Pediatric Pathology research freezer alarm system
• Maintain the liquid nitrogen dewar filling schedule
• Responsible for working with the controller’s office on the bi-annual capital equipment inventory
• Twice a year ethanol inventory
• Other duties as assigned to support research program needs.
Knowledge – Skills – Abilities
• Knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management.
• Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.
Qualifications
Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.
Minimum Required Education: Bachelor’s degree
Minimum Required Experience: No experience required
Sensory Acuity
Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
