Location: Leeds
Hours: Full time
Working Pattern: Hybrid – at least two days per week (or 40% of your time) in our Leeds office
At Lloyds Banking Group, our purpose is to help Britain prosper. In the Economic Crime Prevention (ECP) Platform Team, we play a vital role in protecting our customers and communities by preventing, detecting and responding to fraud and financial crime.
The ECP Platform sits within Consumer Relationships and provides critical data and AI capabilities across the Group. Our work supports colleagues and customers at scale – analysing tens of millions of transactions every day to reduce harm and build trust.
About this opportunity
We’re looking for a Lead Data & AI Scientist to help shape and deliver advanced AI solutions across a wide range of Economic Crime Prevention use cases. You’ll apply modern techniques such as natural language processing, deep learning, graph‑based machine learning and generative AI to real‑world problems with tangible societal impact!
You’ll combine hands‑on technical expertise with leadership, guiding small teams and collaborating closely with data engineers, product partners and business team members to turn complex challenges into effective, production‑ready AI solutions!
What you’ll do
• Build, deploy and maintain machine‑learning models to detect and prevent fraud and financial crime
• Lead and support small teams developing AI products used by internal and external customers
• Work with large, diverse datasets to uncover insights and improve decision‑making
• Collaborate with data engineering teams in the Economic Crime Intelligence Lab to shape scalable, high‑quality data solutions
• Partner with team members to understand business problems and identify where data and AI can deliver the greatest value
What you’ll need
You’ll bring strong technical capability, curiosity and a genuine desire to protect customers. You’ll also be comfortable leading others and explaining sophisticated ideas clearly.
Essential experience:
• A background in computer science, machine learning, mathematics or a similar field
• Experience building, deploying and maintaining NLP or deep‑learning systems
• Strong experience with at least one deep‑learning framework (for example PyTorch, TensorFlow or JAX)
• Confidence working within the scientific Python ecosystem (such as NumPy, Pandas, Scikit‑learn)
• Solid data‑engineering foundations and experience working with large‑scale data
• Strong communication and leadership skills, using empathy, clarity and challenge to help others perform at their best
You don’t need to meet every requirement to apply. If this role excites you and you feel you can make a difference, we’d love to hear from you.
It would be great if you also have
• Experience with libraries such as Hugging Face or PyTorch Geometric
• An understanding of MLOps and the end‑to‑end model lifecycle
• Experience deploying models behind APIs
• Exposure to cloud platforms, particularly Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Vertex AI
