Senior Data Scientist
About this role
C.H. Robinson is seeking a Senior Data Scientist on our Matching team to uncover patterns in data and drive real-time recommendations across user experiences and software platforms. This role is primarily focused on applied data science: translating business opportunities into measurable questions, designing robust experiments, improving models, and partnering with engineering to deliver production impact.
In this role, you will work with a small team on recommendation systems, model improvements, and experimentation in complex operational settings. Some work will involve LLM-enabled products and workflows, but the core of the role is applied modeling, measurement, and decision-making under real-world constraints. You will use statistical and machine learning methods to evaluate competing approaches, measure impact, and guide decisions about which models and processes should move forward. You will also partner closely with machine learning engineers and software developers to take research and prototype work into production.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate current and emerging modeling methods relevant to Matching use cases
- Validate and implement modeling improvements to increase accuracy of data science algorithms
- Design and conduct A/B tests to determine which models and processes perform best
- Design and analyze experiments in complex real-world settings where observations are correlated and standard independence assumptions may not hold
- Define success metrics and analyze the impact of model and process changes
- Communicate findings, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical partners
- Work closely with business stakeholders to translate ambiguous problems into data science opportunities
- Partner with engineering teams to productionize successful models in user-facing systems
- Embrace an R&D mindset through rapid prototyping and iterative experimentation
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in advanced analytics, machine learning and/or data science or one year of professional experience with an advanced degree (Masters or PhD)
- Strong experience with statistical experiment design and analysis
- Experience designing evaluations in settings with correlated observations, interference effects, or other violations of standard experimental assumptions
- Experience with data science models including boosting, classification, and regression
- Experience transforming datasets to improve model performance
- Experience in programming: Python or R
- Familiarity with data fundamentals including SQL
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with causal inference or quasi-experimental methods
- Familiarity with large language model workflows
- Experience building and interacting with APIs
- Experience with streaming services such as Kafka
- Proven ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and out-of-the-box thinking
- Values a diverse and inclusive work environment
- Demonstrated ability to conduct deep research into a targeted subject area
- Strong sense of urgency and an ability to prioritize work effectively to maximize output and productivity
We will review applications for this role on an ongoing basis and encourage all interested candidates to apply at their earliest convenience.
