Sr. Software Engineer
About this role
23andMe sits on one of the largest and most scientifically rich genetic datasets in the world. We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help build and operate the systems that make that data meaningful — powering everything from ancestry features and DNA relatives to health insights and machine learning pipelines that serve millions of customers.
While our Engineering team is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA, this position is open to remote work and we will consider exceptional candidates throughout the United States.
Who We Are
We are a group of individuals passionate about genetic discovery. 23andMe Research Institute is a nonprofit medical research organization that enables people everywhere to access their genetic information, learn about themselves, and participate in the world's largest crowdsourced research initiative. The Institute aims to be the world's most significant contributor to scientific advancement, uniting people with the common goal of improving health and deepening our understanding of DNA — the code of life.
What You'll Do
• Design, build, and operate the backend services and data stores that turn raw genetic data into customer-facing results at scale
• Leverage AI tooling to automate testing, accelerate feature delivery, and ship with confidence through robust CI/CD pipelines
• Partner with product, science, and engineering teams to translate requirements into reliable, scalable systems
• Build AI-powered data pipelines that deliver personalized health and ancestry insights directly to customers
• Debug production incidents and get services back online: you'll own what you ship
What You’ll Bring
• B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent; 4+ years of industry experience
• Deep, hands-on Python: libraries, services, data pipelines
• Infrastructure as code experience, ideally in Terraform on AWS, containerized in Docker
• Hands-on experience working with CI/CD deployment pipelines and testing frameworks
• Experience operating distributed systems at scale: debugging, observability, performance tuning
What We Offer
A small, high-trust team with real ownership, autonomy, and direct impact on one of the most scientifically rich datasets in the world. You'll work at the intersection of software engineering and cutting-edge genetic research without needing to be a scientist yourself. Our R&D and bioinformatics teams own the science; your job is to make it production-ready and scalable, supported by some of the sharpest minds in genomics who are excited to bring you up to speed. We're an AI-friendly team that actively uses coding tools like Claude Code to help engineers do their best work. You'll ship multiple times per week, work with some of the sharpest minds in genomics, and build systems that matter to millions of people.
